Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on words as a young child. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
